SALSA
Inspired by the music of Cuban dance styles, SALSA itself was a marketing ploy
to encourage non-Latins to buy Latin music. It worked, and how! The dance developed
from the exile Cuban community of Miami into probably the greatest world-wide
dance phenomenon on the planet today.
Cuban-Miami Salsa
The “classic” style of Salsa is Cuban-Miami, having originated from
the exile Cuban community in Miami. This features an easy-to-lead and easy-to-follow
pattern ideal to dance with new partners.
Los Angeles Salsa
L.A. Salsa found its roots in another Cuban dance, Mambo. It has a completely
different structure to Cuban-Miami Salsa that it is really a different dance.
However, its popularity means that dancers now often combine elements of LA Salsa
with Cuban Miami.
Merengue
A fun dance from the Dominican Republic shares many moves with Salsa but has an
easier 1-2-1-2 rhythm making it a must at any Salsa Party.
Bachata
Another popular dance from the Dom. Rep. but this time slower and more romantic.
Chachacha
A popular dance, also from Cuba and originally a syncopated version of the Mambo.
Chachacha has a cheeky, mischievous and playful character.
Rumba
One of the great Latin American dances, typified by a slow, smouldering and sensuous
rhythm. A dance that everyone aspires to.
